SpinalDecompression

Decompression traction refers to a decrease in intradiscalpressure and the resultant circulatory improvement andphasic healing concomitant with the decrease in pressure. This type of traction assists in increasing the blood supplyand subsequent nutrition to the discs, which also assistsin healing of the disc. Decompression reduces the pressurein the facet joints allowing for synovial fluid movementand increased mobility of the joint itself.

ManipulationUnder Anesthesia (MUA)

This is a specialized procedure performed in an out-patientsetting that in the past has been the primary domain oforthopedic surgeons. Currently, Dr. Lawson performs thisprocedure in Houston and San Antonio. This procedure requiresthe use of anesthetic medications as provided by an anesthesiologist. The procedure is used to alleviate chronic pain, establishmotion to "frozen joints" or joints with significantlyreduced motion, breaking of scar tissue or adhesion formationwithin joints and muscles that are commonly produced bymultiple injuries or failed back surgery. Manipulationunder anesthesia (MUA) is also useful in decreasing chronicmuscle spasms by stretching persitent shortened muscles, ligaments and tendons. MUA is often times helpful in relievingpain and radiating sypmtoms from damaged intervertebraldiscs.

There are several studies available that demonstratethe effectiveness of MUA.

A study by Robert Mensor, MD shows 83% of 600 patientswith positive EMG findings reported significant improvementfrom lower back and leg pain following the MUA series.

Ongly et. Al. demonstrated an 87% recovery rate of patientswith back pain for more than 10 years in duration followingMUA.

Medical literature demonstrates that for over fourty yearschronic neuromuscular skeletal conditions that have failedthe conservative protocol may respond well to MUA.
Some common conditions treated by MUA are:

- Neck, mid-back, and low-back pain

- Chronic muscle pain and inflammation

- Acute an chronic muscle spasms

- Decreased spinal or extremity range of motion

- Chronic fibrositis

- Nerve entrapment

- Pseudo sciatic

- Sciatic

- Failed back surgery

- Chronic occipital or tension headache

- Torticollis

- Chronic pain

Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is typically followedby 4-8 weeks of physical therapy for best results. Of course, this procedure is for a very selective patient base andcareful patient selection is needed for best results.
